Jim McKelvey talks a good talk but doesn’t seem to be able to walk the talk. It turns out that the $500,000 in self funding is coming from a line of credit that has been set up with his bank. The key word here is credit, aka loan, this from someone who finds fault with the federal government for spending money that it doesn’t have. No double standards here.
I have more respect for someone like Ron Ferrin who is not exceeding his means but still wants to represent the people of the 5th District. Ron talks about fiscal responsibility and is living it by running his campaign on a shoe string budget, McKelvey on the other hand has borrowed money so he can make a big splash in the district with his gaudy motor home and his poorly done advertising. He doesn’t even know how to spend his borrowed money wisely. Is that an indication of what he will do in DC? Clearly Ferrin is the more responsible of the two and would make for a better representative.
With McKelvey we have man that goes out and sheds crocodile tears for his country and complains about our out of control government spending and borrowing of money then does exactly what he is finding fault with. He may sound good on the stump with his “inspiring rhetoric” but that is all it is.
We complain about how shallow President Obama is with his populous speech and fail to recognize the same problem with our own candidates; it is time we paid attention to the actions of our candidates as compared to what they say. Just recently we have had several candidates that have been exposed and whose campaign policies are contradicted by their actions. If we don’t act accordingly and these candidates end up running against Perriello in the general election I can guarantee you that the Democrats will tear them apart.
Congressman Perriello is not going to be easy to beat with his funding and the Republicans cannot yield any ground by putting forth a clearly flawed candidate. We need to choose wisely this June and cannot allow our anger and frustrations to supersede our thinking, after all it was emotions that got Obama elected and you see how well that has worked out.

i just got a call from DNC Services Corp asking 1: would I definitely vote in NOv. election, 2: would I vote for Perriello, Robt Hurt or undecided 3: did I think Obamacare should be repealed & 4: what was my age & gender.
is this DNC as in Dem. Nat’l Committee?
Mckelvey has $500,000 that he claims he has thrown into this campaign. This money is obviously only being used to make him look good. His advertising has been really weak. I have yet to see one of his Tv ads.
I agree, Ron is one of the only candidates managering his campaign like a true conservative. Not spending more than he takes in.
For Mckelvey, when you don’t practice what you preach that looks bad on your appearance. It is very hypocritical. We see where that got FEDA MORTON. Calling himself a fiscal conservative, but borrows $500,000 and goes out and buys a bus. Flashy but is very frivolous of him. At least do something with the money you have.
I would vote for Ron Ferrin or Verga over McKelvey any day.
Hello folks –
The answer is staring us all in the face. If we need someone like Ron Ferrin then we need Ron Ferrin.
Stop overthinking the facts Ron is the only candidate that is from “we the people” he is beholden to noone but his creator he has everything you want and nothing you don’t want.
Do some research and draw your own conclusions.

What we need…………is to defeat the socialist Perriello!!!
Robert Hurt is the only one who can do that!
McKelvey can re-paint the RV after the primary.
Bill fight4theright Hay: Does this mean you are now endorsing Hurt and abandoning Verga?
crabdragonman,
First there are 3 people including myself who post on this blog, and yes we all happen to be on the same political page so to speak. But to answer your question I have not abandoned Laurence, I still feel he is the right person for the job. However I ultimately want Perriello out of office, there is no perfect candidate and there are several running in the primary I would not hesitate to support. There are others that I will not support but would not oppose either. After being on the campaign trail for the last 3 months I have gotten to know most of the candidates fairly well, which has been very enlightening.
After having more of a chance to get to know Sen. Hurt I honestly believe that he has changed since some of his tax votes earlier in his career and I would hope that he would not make the same mistakes in the future. I have always liked the man personally but have questioned his judgment when it came to some of his votes. If the Senator does win the primary I have requested the chance to sit and talk with him and at that point I will make my final decision as to whether I will work to help him beat Perriello.
Again I will say that I will not oppose anyone who is running against Perriello but whether I actively work for that GOP candidate is yet to be seen.
Shouldn’t people be able to spend their OWN money on whatever they choose? The money the government spends DOES NOT belong to them. It is stolen from US!
Everyone please note – going forward, if you would like to keep Bill Hay from calling you a hypocrite DON’T TAKE OUT ANY LOANS!!!
Sam it is not his own money it is borrowed, he has to pay it back to the people he borrowed it from. If you can not see the hypocrisy in running on fiscal responsibility and then borrowing money to run your campaign than I feel sorry for you.
Bill, please say that you paid for your house in cash. And car. College.
He has a line of credit. BIG DEAL! I have a line of credit. I use that and pay it back. It doesn’t mean I don’t HAVE the money. It means that for numerous reasons, it makes more sense to use the credit. You are grasping at straws and losing all credibility.
I support Mike McPadden but in Jim McKelvey’s defense borrowing money for a campaign that the candidate himself is responsible for paying is a far cry from what the Democrats are doing with tax payer money. This site and Bill Hay are grasping for straws for the simple FACT that Verga is next to last in this race.Bill as long as Ferrin stays in the race your candidate won’t finish last.Bill if you want to talk about being honest then you need to be honest and tell Verga he isn’t going to win in the end he will have more respect for you.
Will White, let’s say you are right and Laurence doesn’t have a chance to win. He has had almost three hundred individual donors to his campaign, how does he go to them and say I quit. What kind of respect would you have for a person who because of long odds quits? If our founders gave up because the fight looked impossible we might still be under English rule. I believe Laurence Verga is the right man for the position and I know he is doing it for the right reasons therefore I will not ask him to quit because the straw polls don’t look good. This man has never quit in his life as his personal success illustrates and I would not expect him to do so now.
If like some of you believe he has such low support his remaining in the race will have little if any affect on the outcome.
You are partly right that Verga’s support in this race won’t have alot of affect on the race but this election could be won by just a few votes you do realize this ? If Verga,Ferrin, and Morton want to be blamed for sending a Rino to office let them stay in the race.If Hurt wins the primary and loses to Perriello this fall I will remind you of this.Bill you say you believe Verga is the right man for the job well please explain to me his poor showings in every poll we have seen.I would have ALOT more respect for any candidate that for the good of the party would drop out and back another candidate but in this political climate we are in pride and ego’s are a poor excuse for common sense.
This post, again is misguided. McKelvey borrowed the money against a piece of property that he owns. It is like taking out a second mortgage. He could have sold the property and paid for his campaign but the property is worth over $500,000. There is nothing fiscally irresponsible about that at all.
As for the RV he got it at a discount and will resell it for a profit at the end of the race. If anything this shows that he is a savvy business man.
The ads he has put up are not getting any views on youtube or elsewhere so that may have been a mistake but at least he is trying.
As the race gets towards its final days it is becoming apparent that the field of 7 is not as strong as we thought it was. Feda has IMPLODED with her plagiarism and family problems. Ferrin was never in the race. McPadden has his preacher issue. Verga has faded into obscurity. Boyd is struggling to make inroads into the conservative southside. Hurt and McKelvey are the only two that seem to have any momentum at this point.
Thanks for clearing that up Aaron. Apparently Bill doesn’t have much to attack McKelvey on – so he is attacking him for having good credit. *pfffffft*
Bill might be working behind the scenes for Hurt if he keeps Verga in the race and trashes everyone else it only helps Hurt.Wonder if Verga knows this. I think I will ask him in Lynchburg at the debate.
Aaron McKelvey seems to have gained some ground that is the reason this site is attacking him. Verga,Ferrin, and Feda are all done they do NOT have a chance of winning. If these candidates really want to help the conservative cause they would all three drop out and work hard to get a truely conservative candidate elected.
Isn’t it only fiscally irresponsible if he doesn’t pay it back?
What? Verga has a credit card? Burn him!
What? Feda borrowed a dollar to buy a soda? She can’t be trusted with our money!
What? Boyd lent his son $20 to go to the movies? He’ll just hand out money in D.C.!
What? McPadden has a mortgage? We can’t trust these people!!!
/sarcasm
Seriously, calm down.
